“Judaism, Citizenship, and Democracy” with Yehuda Kurtzer
Friday, December 10 | 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Jewish tradition considers how inhabitants of a jurisdiction become citizens, with rights to earn and obligations to discharge. Join Yehuda Kurtzer as he explores the responsibilities of citizenship and the calculus through which we understand both the burdens and the privileges of belonging.
Kurtzer is the President of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America. Yehuda is a leading thinker and author on the meaning of Israel to American Jews, on Jewish history and Jewish memory, and on questions of leadership and change in American Jewish life.
Kurtzer led the creation of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America in 2010 as a pioneering research and educational center for the leadership of the North American Jewish community and teaches in its many platforms for rabbis, lay leaders, Jewish professionals, and leaders of other faith communities. He is the co-creator of the Shalom Hartman Institute’s iEngage Project, which seeks to bridge between Israel and world Jewry through content, curriculum, and cutting-edge educational programs. Additionally, he is the host of Hartman’s Identity/Crisis podcast which can be found at identitycrisispod.com.
ABOUT THIS VIRTUAL EVENT SERIES
Because of our nation’s sacred promises of religious freedom and opportunity, millions of people over the centuries have fled persecution in other countries to be part of the American experiment. The recent rise of extremism and antisemitism has eroded that fundamental promise, and trends of polarization have created an environment where our democracy, which protects our sacred civil liberties, faces unprecedented threats and challenges. The Jewish Community Relations Council is examining the current crisis in America through its speaker series To Bigotry No Sanction: Jewish Perspectives at the Crossroads of American Democracy and Pathways Forward. Each program will unpack a different aspect of the changing dynamics in our democracy, with a focus on what we as citizens can do to strengthen it.
